試譯看看: 火車出軌，造成一百多人嚴重受傷。 英文可以用 derail 來說明火車跑出了軌道，也就是出軌哩。 那造成多人受傷，英文可以直接用 injure someone 即可。 嚴重地， seriously ，用副詞。 於是這句變成:     The train derailed, seriously injuring more than 100 people.

每日一字: dandelion , 又名 蒲公英。 The dandelion is a perennial, herbaceous plant with long, lance-shaped leaves. 翻譯: 蒲公英是一種多年生草本植物，具有長長的、矛型的葉子。 這個句子裡，有許多形容詞都跟植物有關，如 perennial (多年生的)、herbaceous (草本的)；而 lance-shaped 意指形狀像古代武器,矛,形狀的樣子。

明明人家一家人正在團聚吃晚餐，如果這時候有重要的事情登門拜訪，可能會打擾到人家，這時我們為了避免尷尬(可是尷尬業已發生了)，我們就可以說: 我是不是來得不是時候阿? 那英文該如何表達呢? 所謂的不是時候，就是令人(自己或對方)尷尬的時候，英文可以用 an awkward time 表示。所以整句話，我們可以用現在完成式，說成: Have I come at an awkward time? 很簡單吧!

spasm 這個字，出現在暮光之城(Twilight)原文第四頁(p.4)，放在句中的位置與狀態， 顯然是一個可數名詞(countable noun)，當作"(感情或情緒上)一陣陣"的意思，看看原句怎麼說: I felt a spasm of panic as I stared at her wide,childlike eyes.(當我凝視她寬大又天真的眼睛時，我感到一陣驚恐。) 不過spasm 這字也可當不可數名詞(uncountable noun)，當(突然)抽搐、痙攣意思解，如google字典裡說: The injection sent his leg into spasm. 一針打下去，他的腿就痙攣了。 顯然是個還蠻常碰到的字哦。

想必很多人都看過暮光之城(twilight)這本有點科幻的愛情小說，大家也可以學習它許多用字的技巧唷。 例如，在前言裡(preface, p.1)有個比較不常看到的動詞: saunter (原文例句) He sauntered forward to kill me. (他緩緩走進要殺我。) 這裡的saunter 當不及物動詞，可當作 walk slowly (緩慢地走)之意。 如朗文字典裡的例句: He came sauntering down the road with his hands in his pockets. 就是"手插進口袋，悠閒地走在路上"的一種感覺。 你學會了嗎? :)

台語的諺語說，雖然上一輩平平庸庸，可是後代的能力， 卻超越了他的爸爸媽媽，這是我們會說: "歹竹出好筍!!" 可是類似的意思，英文可不是用筍子來比喻唷， 而是用黑母雞(A black hen)，卻能孵出白色雞蛋來形容。 這個句子中，有個關鍵的動詞，就是孵這個字，用 lay 來表達。 (注意它的三態是 lay laid laid,動名詞為 laying) 於是，當我們要描述 下一代比上一代好，英文就叫做: A black hen lays a white egg. 是不是很有趣呢?

這句英文該怎說呢? 由於最早起是一個要修飾動詞"早起"的"副詞最高級"， 我們要注意，當副詞的 early ,它的副詞最高級是 earliest (不是the earliest 哦), 於是這句話就變成: I got up earliest this morning. 你學會了嗎? :)

蘇打餅乾的英文，可以說成: soda cracker 或 saltine cracker 因此，這句就可以說成: I like eating the soda/saltine crackers most. 很簡單吧!:)
